About Tricia

As seen in South Whidbey Record:

"I offer peace of mind for people who want to go on vacation, to work, or just off the island for the day or evening and need to know their pets will be well taken care of while they're gone."

-Tricia Kegley, owner, Tricia's Pet Care

Tricia's Pet Care business started seven years ago when she offered to take care of a friend's puppy while the owner was out of town. The owner needed to know her puppy would have the responsible care, and Tricia, who loves animals of all kinds, offered to "pet-sit." From the beginning, Tricia got referrals to other clients who needed pet-sitting services, and her business was born.

"I bring an awareness of the bond people have with their beloved pets," said Tricia. "I want my clients to feel comfortable that their pets will be cared for so they can relax and enjoy a vacation."

Tricia goes out of her way to accommodate a pet's regular schedule. She knows that "pets are connected to their humans," and like to have a routine for feeding, exercise and sleep. Her service allows the pets to be left in familiar surroundings with a friendly, caring sitter visiting daily-or even more often-to see to their needs and give them love while their owners are absent. If a pet seems to need it, she'll even add a nighttime "tuck-in" service.

Tricia has a number of regular clients who call her well in advance when they're planning vacations, but last-minute calls can be accommodated, too. With new clients, she makes a home visit to learn all about the pets and their habits. She asks the owners to tell their pets, "This is Tricia and she'll be taking care of you while we're gone." The pets understand, and when she comes later, they often welcome her with their tail-wags and purrs, eager to play.

Tricia takes the time to learn what words the owners use for commands, what the animal's favorite toys and treats are, and when the animal expects to be fed and/or let outside each day. Tricia get to know each animal in her care, and enjoys cordial relationships with her human clients as well. They know they can rely on her to give pets loving attention and responsible care.

Each day, she looks forward to meeting her animal friends. "I like being with the animals and seeing them be happy and well-cared for," she said. "It delights me to interact with them."

"If I notice the pet is behaving differently, I'll contact the owners," she shared. Tricia will also give email or phone updates to pet owners if they request it. "I understand it's a profound thing to be able to find someone you can trust with a beloved pet."

Tricia belongs to Pet Sitters International, a group that promoted professional standards among its members. Her rates for pet-sitting services are commensurate with other pet-care professionals, and depend on the requirements of each job. Currently, most of her business comes from referrals from happy clients, and she will gladly offer references upon request.

Tricia takes care of pets on South Whidbey seven days a week, but is open to the idea of training a few part-time professionals to help with her growing business. "I drive about 100 miles a day," she said. "But I love my work. It's not a job to me-it's enjoyable and a privilege. I'm honored when people hire me and trust me with their precious pets."
